Realtime Color Composer
Diese interaktive Anwendung erstellt in Echzeit aus der Analyse eingehender digitaler MIDI- Klangsteuerungsdaten Graphiken. Das Grundprinzip der Umsetzung von Klang in Bild ist einfach: Den einzelnen Note-on-Befehlen werden - je nach Ton, Lautstärke und Tonhöhe - die Spektralfarben zugewiesen. Hierbei bedient sich Realtime Color Composer des HSL-Modelles (Hue: Farbe, Saturation: Sättigung, Luminosity: Helligkeit). Dies funktioniert folgendermaßen: Jede Note "c" erhält z. B. die Farbe rot. Je nach Oktavlage ändert sich die Helligkeit der Farbe, abhängig von der Lautstärke wechselt die Sättigung.


This interactive Windows application generates images in real-time by analysing incoming digital MIDI data. The basic principle of the conversion of sound to image is simple: The spectral colors are assigned to the Note-on-commands - depending on note, velocity and pitch. Hereby, Realtime Color Composer uses the HSL-model (Hue: color, Saturation, Luminosity). The conversion is achieved the following way: Every note "c" is, for example, assigned to the color red. Depending on the note's octave, the color's luminosity changes; velocity is represented in the color's saturation.

Leonhard Huber's application "MIDI-Paint" received an Award of Distinction at the Prix Ars Electronica '98.

Die umgekehrte Variante des Real Time Color Composer ist ein musikalisches Zeichenprogramm der besonderen Art: Alle Zeichendaten mitsamt den zum Zeichnen verfügbaren Farben werden in MIDI-Informationen umgesetzt. Dies geschieht sowohl beim als auch nach dem Zeichnenvorgang. Bestimmte Farben sind den verschiedenen Klanggruppen zugewiesen. Fertiggestellte Bilder können importiert werden und werden ebenfalls musikalisch interpretiert.


MIDI-Paint, the vice-versa application, is a special musical painting program: All of the drawing data, including the available colors, is translated to MIDI information. This happens during and after painting. Pre-defined colors represent certain instrument groups. Finished paintings can be imported and are also interpreted musically.
